“The Flyover State,” MELKE’s 11th collection, is an ode to the Minnesotan community. While finishing this collection, I was watching my state be torn apart. At the same time, I saw family and community supporting one another and showing the world who we are. 

As a proud Minnesotan, watching the destruction of my community was devastating. And I wasn’t sure how to address it or what to say. As I’ve been observing fashion week (something that would usually inspire me), I’ve felt incredibly distant. 

I grappled with completing this next collection, or even showing it. I weighed the pros and cons. I thought about the industry and the people - many immigrants from all over the world- who go unseen, creating these beautiful pieces, and the fear so many of them are now experiencing.  

The American Midwest is the beating heart of MELKE, and each season I have strived to share this secret garden with those who only know it as a flyover state. This collection is inspired by and dedicated to my community and family in Minnesota.
